How much does a OWI cost in Indiana?

A first OWI in Indiana carries a statutory fine of up to $500 (Class C misdemeanor — IC 9-30-5-2; up to $5,000 if charged as a Class A misdemeanor). This guide stacks every cost layer an official Indiana source prices — the fine, court costs, the license reinstatement fee, the OWI program, ignition interlock, and the SR-22 insurance filing — and says plainly which layers no official source prices at all.

Statutory fine — first OWIA first OWI is a Class C misdemeanor under Indiana Code Sec. 9-30-5-2, punishable by a fine of up to $500 under IC 35-50-3-4; if the offense endangered a person it is a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 under IC 35-50-3-2. The court sets the fine within the range for the offense class.
Court costs & feesThe Indiana BMV does not publish a single statewide court-cost or reinstatement figure for OWI. Reinstatement fees are charged per suspension, and the BMV states the exact dollar amount for each suspension appears in the Suspension Information section of the driver's own Official Driver Record.
License suspension — first offenseThe Indiana BMV pages reviewed do not publish one standard first-offense OWI suspension length; the suspension and its requirements in an individual case are shown on the driver's Official Driver Record. A court may grant specialized driving privileges during a suspension, which restrict driving to the terms of the court order.
License reinstatement feeReinstatement fees are due for most suspensions, but the BMV publishes no fixed OWI amount: the exact fee for each suspension is listed in the Reinstatement Requirements section of the individual's Official Driver Record, and can be paid through a myBMV account, by phone, by mail, or at a BMV Connect kiosk.
Ignition interlockConditional — restricted license / court order — Indiana's BMV lists an ignition interlock restriction (Restriction 6) that a court can impose on a driver convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, or in lieu of a suspension before conviction where there is probable cause to believe the driver was operating while intoxicated. The restriction lasts for the period set by the court or Indiana law. No official install or monthly device costs are published.
OWI education / treatment programNo statewide DUI education or treatment program name or fee for OWI offenders could be verified from the official Indiana pages opened for this research.
SR-22 insurance filingThe Indiana BMV states that drivers whose privileges are suspended on conviction of certain court-related offenses may be required to hold SR-22 insurance to regain their privileges, and that drivers granted specialized driving privileges must keep an effective SR-22 on file with the BMV for the entire privilege period. The insurer files the SR-22 electronically; for insurance suspensions the SR-22 requirement is satisfied after 180 consecutive days of coverage. Because the BMV pages reviewed do not state an OWI-specific SR-22 mandate, SR-22 status for OWI is recorded as unverified.

Ignition interlock

Indiana's BMV lists an ignition interlock restriction (Restriction 6) that a court can impose on a driver convicted of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, or in lieu of a suspension before conviction where there is probable cause to believe the driver was operating while intoxicated. The restriction lasts for the period set by the court or Indiana law. No official install or monthly device costs are published.

The Indiana BMV states that drivers whose privileges are suspended on conviction of certain court-related offenses may be required to hold SR-22 insurance to regain their privileges, and that drivers granted specialized driving privileges must keep an effective SR-22 on file with the BMV for the entire privilege period.

Towing, impound & other charges

No other mandatory OWI-specific cost was published on the official Indiana pages reviewed. A certified copy of the Official Driver Record itself costs $4 from the BMV.

Worked total

Because the court can set the fine anywhere within the statutory range, the total turns on the fine your court actually imposes. Use the verified components on this page, add the fine from your judgment, and stack your own figures in the cost calculator.
